OLEAN — Walkable Olean III — the East State Street project that runs in front of the Olean Municipal Building to Olean — is on schedule.

Late last week crews installed concrete curbing around the north half of the mini-roundabout at East State and Barry Streets.

“They’re continuing to work on the north end of the roundabout,” Olean Mayor Bill Aiello said Monday of KMillennium Construction. “They’re still working on the median. The traffic flow is being maintained.”

As the crews work toward the end of Walkable Olean III, soon they will begin to shift over to Walkable Olean IV, the $3.3 million South Union Street project between the roundabout at State and Union and Franchot Boulevard, Aiello said.

The city got good news last week when representatives of Gov. Kathy Hopchul’s office and the state Department of Transportation agreed to the city’s request to take over final paving of South Union Street because it is a state route.

“That will save us $200,000 or more,” Aiello told the Olean Star Monday. “We’re still working out the details.”
Meanwhile, Millennium Construction efforts are expected to move to South Union Street soon, the mayor said. “They should start putting up signage soon.”

Due to the late time in the road construction season, the paving will be put off until next spring, while other portions of the project that includes a roundabout at South Union and Greene streets, proceed.

“The asphalt plants will be closed before the South Union Street project will be ready to pave,” Aiello said.

The mayor said he was pleased to see how the projects will be coming together over the next month or so. “They will tie together nicely.” he added.
