ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – Senior Chance Moore recorded a double-double and the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team moved its record to 5-0 with a 76-54 win over Mansfield Wednesday night at the Reilly Center.
With the win, the Bonnies have just their third 5-0 open to a campaign since 1990.
Moore recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Bonnies on the stat sheet.
Lajae Jones added 11 points while Dasonte Bowen chipped in nine points and eight assists.
Things didn’t come easy for the entire night, however, as Mansfield proved to be a pesky visitor.
Bona’s slowly built a six-point lead in the early going that was cut back to one, 20-19, to prompt a Bonaventure timeout with 8:45 left before intermission.
The hosts led by six at the break, 36-30, and scored six of the second half’s first seven points to pull ahead by double digits for the first time.
Layups from Moore and Bowen on back-to-back possessions pushed the lead to 14 and the Mountaineers would never close back within less than a dozen the rest of the way.
The Bonnies owned the boards, 46-29, and outscored the undersized Mounties by 26 in the paint, 46-20.
Eleven different Bonnies recorded points, wrapped up with a three-pointer from sophomore Miles Rose to complete the scoring, the first of his Bonnies career.
Owen Chambers gave Mansfield a spark with 11 points and seven rebounds.
“The numbers look good, but we didn’t play the way we’re capable of playing. You can make the excuse that it’s a Division II team and there was a little bit of a lack of motivation, but we only have 31, 32 opportunities and we only have 15 or 16 opportunities at home,” said Schmidt. “We owe the people who come and support us night in and night out the best effort. We’re not going to play great all the time. We’re going to miss some shots, but our effort can’t be questioned.”
