Bradford City Council approves hiring at Police and Fire Departments; tennis and pickleball courts coming to Callahan Park

On Tuesday, May 28, the Bradford City Council met and approved hiring multiple first responders and additional funding for painting at the Callahan Park tennis/ pickleball courts.

Colby Keane, a cadet hire of the Bradford City Police Department, will attend the Mercyhurst University Police Academy. In addition, the council approved hiring Mike McConnell, Tristan Danielson and Kyle Yorty as part-time Bradford City Firefighter/EMTs. Jahmair McKenzie was hired as summer help for the Bradford City Fire Department.

Councilman Fred Proper said, “Please note, the temporary assistance which the council has just approved will be a huge help to assist with the staffing shortage experienced by the Bradford City Fire Department.”

In other business, Amber Confer was appointed to the Downtown Bradford Business District Authority for a five-year term.

The celebration following the Kids & Cancer Dice Run will be held this year in Bradford on July 27 between 372 and 440 East Main Street on Saturday, July 27. During the council meeting, the council approved a request from Benjamin Skaggs, owner of JJ’s Saloon, for a waiver allowing for the consumption of beer and malt beverages outdoords, in plastic containers, between 2 and 8 p.m.

The Council accepted a proposal from DK Environmental & Construction Services, Inc. to provide lead-based paint testing for Bradford City’s Single-Family Housing Rehabilitation Program and it accepted a proposal from Gelsick Home Inspection, LLC to provide radon testing. This testing will be paid for by the 2023 Community Development Block Grant  Program. 

The Council approved the sixth change order for Phase One of the Callahan Park Recreation Improvements Project. This change was for painting tennis and pickleball courts at Callahan Park. The additional cost will be $11, 700 and will be funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and City of Bradford.

The deputy director for Bradford’s Office of Economic and Community Development Karen Costello-Pecht informed the Bradford Star that a complete description of updates made for Phase One of the Callahan Park improvements will be made available in the near future.

The next meeting of the Bradford City Council will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11.
